Annual Survey of Available Technologies In the Public Sector
One of the main responsibilities of the National Information Centre is to conduct surveys and studies in information technology in Jordan. The aim of the 1996 survey was to update the information of the 1994 survey. The database will be helpful for government in specifying the needs of the public organizations in IT equipment. The last survey gives a clear picture of what is available of equipment in the public sector until the end of 1996.
The Centre distributed a questionnaire to 80 organizations in the public sector . Of those, 76 organizations responded only.
The study is divided into four chapters:
I. Available Equipment
-Of the small equipment category, 64% of the government organizations use PCs. The total sum available was 5240 computer.
-Of the medium and large equipment category, 78 computers were " departmental', 28 computer belonged to the "midrange type" and 17 were big "enterprise type". The category of the computer used in the government depended on the volume and nature of work.
The study shows that the rate of annual growth in IT equipment
was around 5% .

Printers
Printers belonged to the following categories:
| Percentage % | ||
| Line Printer | 4.8 | |

| Laser printer | 29.8 | |
| Ink Jet | 12.3 |
Communication Technology
Two types of communication technologies are being used:
-Serial connection
-Ethernet
Operating Systems
Three main systems are used:
-UNIX operating system
-Novell network
-Windows and MS-DOS
Data Base Management Systems
Five main types are used.

III. Human Resource Distribution
Computer jobs available:
| Computer Centre Head | ||
| Computer Section Head | ||
| System Analyst | ||
| Programmer | ||
| Engineer | ||
| Others |
Some of the basic jobs in information technology were not available
in some organizations. An example of these jobs were the jobs
for system analysis and programming. Reason for this shortage
could be lack of funds, the nature of the work of those organizations
and the duties that are delegated to the information departments.
Use of the "Principles" prepared by the Centre
The following list shows how the "principles" related
to IT and prepared by NIC are used:
| Tender documents & proposal evaluation | ||
| Job Description for information classification | ||
| Principles & Methodology in establishing information systems | ||
| Principles & Methodology in establishing information centres |
IV. Results
The results showed that most of the organizations had plans to
computerize in 1997 and they are looking foreword to executing
the plan. There were 74 organizations who had plans and this shows
that computerization because it economizes in effort time and
money, is becoming important and is given priority in development
plans.

Internet Registries offering service in JORDAN
Local Internet Registries (IRs) process the vast majority of address space assignments to end users, taken from allocations they receive from the RIPE NCC, the Middle East Region ISP. Most Local IRs are operated by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and offer IP registration services to the customers of the ISP.
