Community Centers Inaugurated by HM the King Jordan Information Technology Community Centers Inaugurated by HM the King In response to HM King Abdullah II directive, the Royal Committee for Jordanian Information Technology and Community Centers (JITCC) in cooperation with various organizations in the public and the private sector who have active presence in the local communities, is establishing centers in different parts in the country. The objective of this initiative is to create a computer literate society by bridging the digital gap between all strata of society and to give rural Jordanians living in remote areas the opportunity to learn computer skills and information communication technology. The centers will be supplied with I.T. equipment and training courses will be conducted to train local trainers. The plan will include 12 JITTCs distributed around the Kingdom in different governorates. To date, ten centers have been established, five of them inaugurated by His Majesty King Abduallah II in Safawi, Muwaggar, Tafilah, Yarmouk (Amman) and Gatranah. The centers have been established in coordination with the Ministry of Education, the National Information Centre, Ministry of Planning, Badia Development Program, UNDP and UNESCO and The Hashemite Fund for Human Development. The local communities in the area will cooperate in executing the project as they did in Tafilah and Muwaggar where the centre were opened in coordination with Queen Alia Community Center which is managed by the Hashemite Fund for Human Development. Interconnectivity among JITCC in the different governorates
So far, five Information Technology Community Centres (ITCC) were inaugurated by His Majesty the King in Tafileh, Muwaggar, Wahadneh, Safawi and Yarmouk. The JITCC provides training on basic computer skills and the internet. The main objective of these centres is to create a computer literate society. The centres are located in the community centre of the villages and managed by the local inhabitants of the area. The National Information Centre is responsible for purchasing the equipment and monitoring the network connection. NIC participation in Seminars, Workshops and Conferences
The NIC participated in the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on intellectual property quetions relating to ccTLDs, in Geneva, Switzerland on February 20, 2001. The ccTLDs are the (country code Top Level Domain administrators). In other words, they are the registrars responsible for registering domain names for users of the Internet under the two letter country code. Subjects included presentations on the future of ccTLDs, registration practices, trade marks and copyright owners, the role of the alternative dispute resolution and prevention of the UDRP, models of intellectual property protection from different countries in the world, the three types of resolution jurisdiction including the open or unrestricted jurisdictions, the semi-restricted registries and the restricted registries.
The National Information Centre participated in the E-Business and Development Conference that was held in Cairo from 12-15 March, 2001. The subject of the conference was e-business and how it facilitates the socio-economics development process. All the different world experiences that were discussed affirm that in spite of all the difficulties that developing countries face when applying e-business, developing countries should venture and apply e-business. The Egyptian experience was discussed and new initiatives were promoted to encourage easy transfer from traditional to digital business. During the conference, the National Information Centre participated in singing on an initiative to establish the Arab Union of Information Technology that will encourage in use of technology in the Arab World, encourage training in this field and open channels of communication and cooperation among Arab IT experts.
The NIC was invited by the European Commission to attend a meeting for the Mediterranean focal points to discuss the EUMEDIS IP Interconnection Initiative in Brussels from 15-16 March. The purpose pf the meeting was to discuss interconnectivity of Mediterranean countries research centres and universities networks with that of European research networks and universities over a wide bandwidth of multi-mega bits / sec. The EC will finance 80% of the project while 20% will be financed by the member Mediterranean countries. The meetings included presentations from individual countries on communication infrastructure availability and development. Other presentations were on European research networks. Requirements for interconnectivity were discussed and an advisory group was established to follow up the progress and participation in the initiative. NIC participated in the meeting in its capacity as National Information System coordinator.

Centre participated in the first founders meeting of the Arabic Internet
Names Consortium (AINC), from 31 March - 1 April, 2001 at the invitation
of the Multilingual Internet Names Consortium (MINC) and Talal Abu
Gazaleh International who hosted the meeting. The Founders Meeting of
the Arabic Internet Names Consortium was attended by 53 members of the
constituent General Assembly. They included the approved registrars of
the Arab countries, experts and representative governmental bodies. The
main objective of this consortium is to find a common standard for
Arabizing domain names at ccTLD and the gTLD levels. The general
assembly agreed upon meeting twice a year. The first meeting will be in
Cairo in September 2001. The elected board members are chairman of the
following committees which are open to anyone interested in joining: Adopting the National Information System as the National Information Base for the Public Sector The
following circular, concerning the National Information System, was
issued by the Prime Minister to all departments and ministries in the
government reminding them of the role the National Information Centre
