JITCC Activation Under the patronage of the Minister of Education and Higher Education and Scientific Research, the National Information Centre held a two-day workshop for the activation of the JITCCs from 29-30 Sept., 2001. The workshop was attended by the administrators and trainers of the Centres. The objective of the workshop was to discuss the structure of the JITCC project and the Centres’ roles in the JITCC network and the role of the supervising hosts.The role and responsibilities of the administrators and trainers was discussed the first day. Specific sets of procedures were suggested to help supervisors in sustaining the Centres and in meeting challenges and in developing the Centres to meet the IT needs of the community it serves. On the second day, the training needs were discussed, curricula was defined and standardizing tests and certificates were discussed. Participants discussed trainers needs for training and skills development.
Selection Criteria for the
Location Jordan Information Technology Community Centres (JITCCs) In accordance with His Majesty’s directives, the National Information Centre conducted a feasibility study to prepare a justifiable plan for the selection of locations and distribution of JITCC in all the governorates. The network of the JITCCs will be a platform for enhancing IT culture, narrow the digital divide and prepare remote areas as well as urban settlements for the future electronic government. The study presented a criteria for the selection of the sites taking the density of the populated areas, their size and the administration division in each governorates into consideration. A recommended list of institutions with potential to host the 60 centres was also suggested. Up till now, 20 centers have been established . Information Society Challenges: a Lecture On 22nd May, 2001, Mr.George Metakides, CEO of Basic Technology in the Information Society in the European Union, and coordinator of operations, gave a lecture on the challenges that face the IT sector worldwide. He said that there are difficult challenges facing this IT sector, mainly in the labour market. He pointed out that it is crucial to train more people in IT and develop available human resources to meet the ever changing needs of IT and IT working environment especially in e-government environment. Mr. Metakides said that, in spite of the large number of graduates in IT in the United States and Europe, there is still shortage in IT personnel. Mr. Metakides pointed out that developing countries should give more attention to the IT sector, modify legal legislations to meet the new accelerating developments adding that a lot of countries now need to review their legislations to accommodate the changes in IT. Water and Environment Directorate Web Site http://www.mwi.gov.jo The National Centre for Agricultural Research and Technology Transfer has launched a web site for the Water and Environment Directorate on the Internet, specifically on the NIC portal for Jordan. The site includes subjects on water needs, irrigation programming, plant rotation in the Ghor, agricultural climate, temperature, humidity and wind speed. The European Union Finances 15 Jordanian Projects in IT The
European Union announced the acceptance of 15 Jordanian projects in IT for the
Eumedis initiative. The projects were selected from among 40 Jordanian projects
that were presented to the Eumedis Initiative. | ||||||||||||

A new book about Computer Law by Attorney Yunis Arab Computer Law is the title of the new book by Yunis Arab. It is a five volume series and is published by the Union of Arab Banks. The first volume, which is 500 pages, is divided into two parts. The first part discusses the general theory of computer laws and their applications in computer crimes, e-commerce, e-government, banks and intellectual property rights. The second part includes eight chapters and discusses computer laws, information security and its development, privacy law, data security, computer and Internet crimes, Arabic law and intellectual property rights of computer programs and data bases and Internet content, framework of e-commerce, electronic transactions and verifications, electronic banking, electronic government and legal requirements and last but not least, legal conflicts in the internet environment. | ||||||||||||

To serve it’s users more effectively, the NIC has upgraded it’s bandwidth starting August 2001. New services have been introduced including ADSL for speedy communication. Competitive prices have been also introduced to conform with the needs of the organizations and the local market. | ||||||||||||

NIC Staff Certified OCP & MCSE NIC IT staff attended a number of certified training courses in the field of Information Technology, acquiring internationally accredited certificates. The certificates included OCP (Oracle Certified Professional) certificate in the Database Administration and Development and in MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) in Windows 2000 and Networking. These certificates where granted after passing the required exams for each of these tracks. The aforementioned courses are part of the World Bank funded Government Computer Capacity Improvement Project which aims at improving the capacity of the computer departments in governmental institutions. | ||||||||||||
