JORDANIAN BUSINESS DIRECTORY ON-LINE

While navigating the Internet looking for Jordanian information, we came across a myriad of sites registered outside Jordan. The sites have been collected under one page to form a directory of commercial sites. This is a searchable directory and is meant to be a guide that provides information on some of the private/commercial sector in Jordan. The sites supply particular type of information necessary to complete the picture about Jordan provided by the National Information System (NIS). The web sites have been assigned to relevant categories and links have been made to the relevant sector on the NIS system to enhance retrieval. For example, private hospitals have been linked to the public health sector. This linkage would give the user of the NIS a more comprehensive picture of the health scene in Jordan. The categories include the following topics: banks, clubs & cafés, communication, computers, courier, crafts, directories, education, engineering & consultants, food, general, hospitals & medical services, hotels, industry, insurance, international organizations, investment law, marketing, music, newspapers & mass media, office & equipment, organizations, personal, real estate, shipping, special subjects, sports, tourism & travel, trade and web developers.

New Technology at the National Information Centre

Because our operations at NIC depend heavily on computers and our customers rely solely on our operations and to ensure a smooth running of the information network, The National Information Centre has installed recently few sate of the art equipment:

-A firewall system. The firewall will handle and support security measures. The firewall is set to satisfy high level security policies including packet filtering, circuit-level gateway and applications proxy including SNMP management

-SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is the protocol for network devices management. It is used to manage routers and hubs.

The SNMP manager is able to discover all devices in the network and then to browse the contents of each MIB device. The network manager is then able to set up and manage devices remotely.

-UPS or Uninterruptible Power Supply system which acts like buffer between the incoming power supply and the electronic equipment, such as computers, modems and other electronic devices. The UPS unit constantly monitors the quality and characteristics of the power supply. If any changes in the power supply are detected, the UPS supply the amount of power needed before any damage can be done to the equipment. The new UPS system will supplement any drops, cuts or excesses to the power supply. The damage done without UPS could be very expensive in terms of data, hardware and unrecoverable damage to hard disks.

Users of the Internet in Jordan

The Internet was introduced in Jordan in 1995. At the beginning, very few organizations dared to subscribe. But as the mystery that engulfed the Internet subsided, subscriptions increased. However, with the condensed training and workshops that the Centre has held, organizations are becoming aware of the advantages of having access to the Internet. Of course, getting connected to the Internet allows organizations to access the National Information System, which is the main mission of NIC. The number of users is growing, ISP’s are increasing and the prices have become competitive. The estimated number of users in Jordan is between 20000-30000 users including the universities and the academic and student bodies.

Common Problems in the Arabization of Internet web pages (HTML) and suggested solutions

The technical staff of the National Information Centre (NIC) have conducted a study of the common problems that arise in the process of designing and developing Internet web pages, and composed some suggested solutions for Arabization problems in editing web pages.

This problem can be solved by adding the attribute ( DIR=RTL) to the <HTML> tag.

<HTML DIR=RTL >

At the end of this report there is an example that combines

Arabic and English in the same Table.

There are various solutions for this problem :

    1. Titles of the Table can be repeated every 20 lines (the maximum number of lines that fit in one page) to eliminate any confusion to the readers.
    2. A table may be divided into parts ; each part should fit one screen, A hyper link may be added to the next and previous part(s) of the table. (This solution is demonstrated in the example)

The solution for this problem is not to specify the field width (<td width=70>), so the browser determines the proper width of each field. Row titles should be fixed and the table should be divided along the rows as mentioned above in item (2). (This solution is demonstrated in the example)

HTML Tables can be opened inside Excel and modified inside Excel as an ordinary Excel sheet as described in the following steps:

  1. after viewing the table, save it using (Save As) from the file menu,
  2. run Excel then choose (open) from the file menu,
  3. set the (File Type) to (HTML Documents),
  4. choose the file you saved in step 1, and
  5. deal with the opened table as an ordinary Excel sheet.
