Consultative Meeting on Knowledge Stations, NITC, 6 November, 2004.
On November 6th, 2004, the Royal Commission of the Knowledge Stations (KS) Project held a brainstorming meeting with the Project Management Unit (PMU) senior staff, at the National Information Technology Center. Representatives from the Jordan Education Initiative (JEI) Project in Jordan attended. The meeting was headed by the Minister of Education, chairman of the Royal Commission. The purpose of the meeting was to present a comprehensive picture about the achievements of the KS project as well as present the future vision of the project to the Royal Commission (RC) members and guests.
Activities of the Knowledge Stations
1. On October 14th. NITC in coordination with Johns Hopkins University Knowledge Station Project held an Orientation Training Workshop for all Knowledge Station trainers at the Radisson SAS hotel. The purpose of the workshop was to train the trainers on how to use the electronic questionnaire entitled "Validation of Health Priorities in Jordan" which is part of their "Health Communication Partnership Project". Johns Hopkins University provided a comprehensive vision about the project. 850 questionnaires were distributed to local community members who attend the workshop in Amman, filled them out and returned them for analysis.
2. Following NITC cooperation with Johns Hopkins University, Dr. S. Farah, Director of Johns Hopkins University Office in Jordan and his team paid a visit to the National Information Technology Center. They met with Dr. Yousef Nusseir and Mr. Nasser Khalaf, the Knowledge Stations Coordinator. The purpose of the visit was to explore future collaboration between both parties. The visit was a successful one and Dr. Farah expressed Johns Hopkins University intention to work with NITC as a major partner in their Health Communication Partnership Project in Jordan. The project concentrates on developing a Health Portal with a community participation component. Johns Hopkins University envisages the Jordanian Knowledge Station Project as the major partner who would be able to extend the local community participation component to a regional Arab Health Portal.
3. On August 15, 2004. NITC, MICROSOFT and King Abdullah Fund for Development (KAFD) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to implement a six-month project funded by Microsoft and entitled "Mapping Community Needs to Support Local Innovations through IT". The Knowledge Stations Project Management Unit (PMU) developed a detailed action plan for the project and the first training would take place on December 19th. The major outcome of the project is to build a dynamic group of trainers who will be qualified to map the community needs in ten Knowledge Stations and in co-operation with local communities. Ten community projects will be implemented utilizing IT to support the local community needs. A final evaluation event will be held to present projects implemented and major results of the project.

The 2004 Conference on International Business Information Management, Amman, 4-6 July, 2004. Host: The Royal Scientific Society. Main theme: Information Technology organization in the 21st Century: Challenges & Solutions.
Cataloguing Internet Resources By Using Metadata & the Dublin Core, Cairo, 4-8 July, 2004. NITC participated in a Workshop in Cairo entitled “Cataloguing Internet Resources by using Metadata and the Dublin Core” from 4-8 July. The Workshop was sponsored by the Arab Organization for Administrative Development. Cataloguing Internet resources by using the Dublin Core is one of the hot issues in Internet resource cataloguing for easy access. The Workshop was attended by librarians, academicians, and web developers and designers from all over the Arab Region.
Preliminary WSIS Regional Meeting, MOICT, Amman, 1 November, 2004. NITC participated in the special preliminary meeting of the National WSIS Committee. The meeting was held at the MOICT and the NITC was requested to prepare a paper concerning Jordan’s position on Internet Governance which will be discussed in the WSIS Conference in Tunis in 2005. The meeting was held at MOICT on 1 Nov., 2004.
Global Forum on Promoting Enabling Environment for Digital Development, 7th Meeting, Berlin, 19-20 November 2004. NITC participated in the 7th Meeting of the Global Forum on Promoting Enabling Environment for Digital Development in Berlin. The Forum discussed the role of stakeholders in fostering enabling environment and policy and regulatory issues and financing ICT for development.
Regional Preparatory Conference for WSIS, 2nd, Damascus, 22-23 November, 2004. NITC participated in the Second Regional Preparatory Conference of WSIS entitled “Partnership for building the Arab information society” that was held in Damascus in November, 2004 and that was arranged by ESCWA. The aim of the conference was: - To prepare the Regional Plan of Action for building the information society that will be discussed in the conference in Tunis in 2005. - To discuss the proposed Information and Communication division (ICTD) of ESCWA work programme for the biennium 2006-2007 - To discuss the plan prepared by ESCWA and modify it to become a regional plan. The last modification will be presented to the Arab League to endorse and execute it. - To review Arab plans for addressing the digital divide. - To effectively market the plan among the different stakeholders. - To launch basic regional projects with available funding and effective partnership. Dr. Yousef Nusseir, Director General of NITC, attended the Conference. He presented a paper on “Arab Cooperation in Building an Information Society”. He discussed the present Arab national projects in this domain and proposed means and ways for cooperation and coordination on a regional level to achieve a regional Information Society. The meeting was attended by some 300 participants from all over the Arab region.

Meeting of the Consultative Committee on Scientific & Technological Development & Technological Innovation, Damascus, 24 November, 2004. NITC participated in the Second Meeting of the Consultative Committee on Scientific & Technological Development & Technological Innovation in Damascus on 24th November. The meeting was prepared by ESCWA. The aim of the meeting was to: - Promote networking research and development (R&D) in the ESCWA member countries. - Make the ICTD work programme more adapted to the needs of the ESCWA member countries.
