Meeting of the Ad Hoc Committee on Studying the Use of Arabic Language in Domain Names on the Internet, 1st  meeting, Damascus, 31 Jan.-2 Feb., 2005.
 

NITC Participant: Ghazwa Malhas/ Information Advisor For DG Office

Organizers: The Syrian Ministry of Communication and Technology with the coordination of the Arab League.

Participants: Six Arab countries participated in the meeting including Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Sudan, the Emirates, Saudi including  ESCWA and Arab Information Architects (Syria).

Recommendations:

-         Application of Arabic grammar to retain the language.

-         Simplify the use of names.

-         Avoid mixing Arabic letters with foreign ones.

-         Avoid the use of diacritics.

-         Avoid letter folding.

-         Allow the use of the dash between words

-         Allow the use of the two forms of numbers, in its westren and eastren forms.

-         Adopt the Arabic script table of Unicode.

-         Adopt the Arabic country code of the Arabic standard (no. 642-1985)  produced by ALDOC of the Arab League and place a request to update it.

-         Propose a general guideline for the use of Arabic domain names for registrars and registrants.

-         Request the registration of the top level domain .Arab, with ICANN.

Towards a New Generation of Search Engines on the Internet, Sharm Sheikh,  6-10 /2/ 2005

       NITC Participant: Sahar Hasan / Head of Systems Development.

       Organizer: The Arab Organization for Development and Management.

       Aim: The importance of Arabic search engines in building bridges between the Arab World and the West, the effect of search engines on retrieval output,    the   role of search engines in marketing and information services, giant search engines and their importance in introducing Arab culture on the Internet, and the            importance  of designing Arabic search engines.

      Subjects Discussed:

-          Software programs of search engines.

-         The effect of search engines on marketing and e-commerce.

-         International law related to Internet and its relation with search engines.

-         Arabic search engines.

-         The future of Arabic search engines.

-         Search Engines Optimization ( SEO).

       Participants: Egypt, Jordan, the Emirates, Tunis, Algeria, Saudi, Sudan, Oman, Kuwait, Palestine, Lebanon, Egypt and Yemen.

       Recommendations:

-         Encourage the public and private sectors in the Arab world to design subject. search engines.

-         Design a legal framework for Arabic search engines.

-         Apply metadata with the assistance of librarians.

Arabic Content Workshop, Tunis, 8-15 /2/ 2005

Organizers: Arab Information Club.

Objective:The objective of the workshop was to discuss the importance of creating Arabic. content on the Internet, address the barriers and find solutions.
Subjects discussed:

- The present state of the Arabic content and its management.

- Reflection of Arabic content of Arab culture.

- Arabic search engines.

- Statistics on Arabic content

- Investment returns of advertising on Arabic sites.

The Free and Opensource Software Workshop, Damascus, 2-4/3/2005
 

Participant: Ali Al-Khalidi / Head of Technical Consulting.

Aim: The Free and Opensource Software Workshop is considered a new initiative launched by NOSSTIA (Network of Syrian Scientists, Technologists and Innovators Abroad) and Syrian GNU/Linux Users group in order to spread the concept of Open source software and  support the development process of the IT Sector in Syria. The Importance of this workshop came from the fact that it presents and enhances the concept and philosophy of open source software as a potential alternative of the closed software in the world. Also, the workshop seeks to bridge local expertise with regional and world expertise.The workshop contributed to capacity building and knowledge transfer to enhance and promote the competency of the industry professionals.

Workshop to Launch Results of the Multiple Purpose Family Survey of 2003, Amman,  14/3/2005

NITC Participant :
Khaled Awashreh / Head of Research and Studies.

Organizers: Department of Statistics.

Participants: relevant Jordanian public sector organizations and NGOs.

Aim: to explain to relevant organizations the statistical methodology used in the survey and  compare the different findings with  previous surveys.

Participatory Rapid Appraisal Workshop (PRA), Amman, 19-28 Dec., 2004


Organizer:NITC/PMU (Project Management Unit of the Knowledge Stations) .

Participants: Trainees from 10 Knwledge Stations participated, they came from the three different regions in Jordan, north, south and middle.

Aim:The workshop was designed to train trainers on identifying the different socio-economic needs of the communities through partnering with the local people and through the use of IT to enhance development projects in each community. The duration of  the project was six months.
