The National Information System , Annual Report, 2004.
The annual report of the National Information System was issued recently. It includes various reports on the services and achievements implemented in 2004 to fulfill its objectives and its mandate. The Studies Section includes two main surveys that were conducted and their results. The Report also comprises a section on NITC services to the government and the private sector as an ISP and ccTLD (Top Level Domain) registry. Other sections discuss the Knowledge Stations Project that mainly tackles the digital divide and the e-Government Operation Centre that the NITC hosts. At the end of the report there is a list of the conferences and workshops attended by NITC staff.

Meeting of the Arab Working Group on Arabic Domain Names, 2nd, Cairo, 7,9 May, 2005
The Second Meeting of the Arab Working Group on Arabic Domain Names was held in Cairo on 7 and 9 May, 2005. The meeting was held in conjunction with the Pan Arab Conference on WSIS-Phase II on “ Arab Regional Dialogue”, that was held from 8-10 May, 2005 (www.wsis-egypt.gov.eg). NITC participated and presented a paper on the procedures of registering .arab on the Internet with ICANN. The Syrians presented “Guidelines” for the use of Arabic in domain names and country codes. The Gulf countries (UAE and Suadi Arabia and Qatar) presented a Pilot Project on Arab Domain Name to test out the scheme through select government departments and other organizations. All Arab countries have been invited to participate in the venture.
ISOC Regional Conference MEA, Cairo, 8 May, 2005
- The ISOC first regional conference, INET MEA, was held on May 8th, 2005 in Cairo. The meeting was organized in conjunction with the Second Pan-Arab Regional Conference for the World Summit on the Information Society in Cairo, Egypt on May 8th -10th. It was hosted by the Egyptian ISOC chapter and sponsored by the Egyptian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. The INET MEA regional conference was held under the title 'The Internet: How it works, Why it works, Who makes it work?' and focused on the technical and policy coordination aspects of the Internet. Speakers included specialists from the MEA region and other parts of the world.There was a session on Internet Exchange Points in Africa presented by Didier R. Kasole. He gave an interesting summary of the experience made when setting up exchange points in Africa that are important for local traffic because they can reduce costs for local providers and their customers. There was a session on 'Internationalizing the Internet' and IDN. This was followed by a presentation by Raed Al-Fayez who gave an overview of the GCC pilot project for Arabic domain names. The INET MEA conference complemented the session 'Internet Governance: Public Policy and Technical Coordination' that was organized during the Pan-Arab Regional WSIS conference. On 8th-10th May 2005 the 'Pan Arab Conference on
WSIS - Phase II' took place in Cairo, Egypt.
http://www.wsis-egypt.gov.eg/main.asp. On Monday, 9th May 2005, two sessions
on Internet Governance were organised: .The second session was organized as a panel. Panelists included Nitin Desai, WGIG Chair, Dr. Paul Twomey, President & CEO, ICANN, Dr. Imad Sabouni, General Manager, Syrian Telecommunications Establishment Ms. Lynn St.Amour, President & CEO, ISOC, Mr. Robert Shaw, Internet Strategy and Policy Advisor, ITU, Mr. David Maher, Senior Vice President, PIR Moderator: Wolfgang Kleinwaechter, Professor at the University of Arhus and Dr. Tarek Kamel, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Egypt, chaired the session. Special interest was given to the role of ICANN and it's MoU with the US government, which is expected to end in September 2006. Steps to further internationalization of the Internet was also discussed. On 10th May the conference ended with an 'Arab-African Information Society Joint Communique. The Jordan MOICT participated in the Conference. Her excellency, Minister Nadia Saeed headed the Jordanian delegation and participated in the discussions. |

On 30/05/2005, the Minister of Communication, Information Technology opened the Third Regional Exhibition, WEBEX, in Amman. The The National Information Technology Centre participated for the second year running in the Third Webex exhibition. Around 40 Internet technology institutions and companies from Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar took part in the exhibition. The Amman WEBEX 2005 Exhibition aims to bolster cooperation between Arab Internet technology companies and enhance their role in their own societies.

NITC participated in the Regional Meeting to Develop the Communication and Information Technology Sector, in Damascus. The meeting was organized by The International Development and Research Center (IDRC) and The Syrian Scientists Society (NOSSTIA). The Director General of NITC presented a paper on Jordanian initiatives in communication and information technology and the importance of Arabic digital content.

Training Workshops on Youth Leadership Project in Knowledge Stations
The Project Management Unit (PMU) of the Knowledge Stations at the National Information Technology Center held four workshops for training trainers in Youth Leadership in May and June, 2005. One hundred trainees from the different Knowledge Stations participated in the workshops. The workshops were conducted to implement the MoU between the NITC and Help the Children Federation. The Workshops concentrated on the following tracks: o Participative leadership as a substitute for traditional leadership. o Social change as a product of effective new leadership techniques. o Promotion and support of equality and justice among weaker groups as youth and women. The Workshops aim at enhancing youth participation in leadership and in identifying community needs and developing and implementing initiatives to meet ICT needs through successful leadership characterized by credibility and transparency, analytical thinking and passionate interest in the community.

In its efforts to bolster the use of information
and create the information society, the National Information Technology Center
encourages schools and organizations from inside and outside Jordan to visit the
Center. The NITC receieved the following groups during the past quarter:
On 13th June, 2005, Mrs. Huda Hammoudeh, Director of the Palestinian National Information Center, from the State Information Service paid a visit to the NITC. The aim of this second visit was to learn more from the experience of the Jordanian counterpart concerning their efforts to bolster the use of information.
