Arab Academy for Electronic Business Founding Committee,  Meeting, Damascus, August, 23-25/8/2005.

 

The Arab Academy for Electronic Business Founding Committee held its last meeting in Damascus. The Secretary General of the Council of Economic Arab Unity headed the meeting. Dr. Yousef Nusseir, Director General of the NITC attended the meeting as the representative for the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. In this last meeting, the Committee concluded all duties it was entrusted with, including feasibility studies, the internal charter and membership conditions and signing of agreements. The Council of Economic Arab Unity had earlier approved the selection of Aleppo in the Syrian Arab Republic as the headquarters of the Academy. It also decided that the present country representatives act temporarily as board of trustees until the participating country appoints a permanent representative on the board.

Cooperation with the Regional Office of the World Health Organization, Amman, 9/8/2005.

 

     

The Representatives from Jordan and Egypt from the World Health Organization paid a visit to the Director General of the NITC on 9/8/2005. The aim of the visit was to discuss cooperation between WHO regional office and NITC with regard to identifying sources of health information, publishing it on the Internet and make it available for use. The WHO group was interested in disseminating health information from the Knowledge Stations that are distributed all over the Kingdom to users in the rural and remote areas. NITC and the visitors from WHO Regional Office agreed on drawing health activity plans that would involve The Ministry of Health and NITC and WHO. Plans will include awareness programs on health information sources and their databases and workshops related to health information and health information systems. A decision was taken to conduct a national conference on health information and related computer applications on health, hospital management systems and other subjects that are related to e-health.

An On-Line Discussion Forum, Jordan Radio & TV, 3-4/9/2005.

 

The National Information Centre participated in an on-line Discussion Forum held at the Jordan Radio and TV Station for two consecutive days from 3-4 September, 2005. The subject of the discussion was related to the digital divide and preparedness of the different Arab countries for the information society. The success story of the Jordanian Knowledge Stations was presented as an example of bridging the digital divide.

"ICT and Poverty Alleviation", 3rd Sham International Conference, Damascus, Sept. 4-6, 2005

A conference on ICT and poverty alleviation was conducted in Damascus from 4-6, September, 2005. The aim of the conference was to discuss topics and experiences related to the digital divide and the utilization of ICT in poverty alleviation, development of remote areas, creation of jobs,  development of human resources and provision of social service.  The conference also highlighted lessons learnt form success stories worldwide in this domain to define an optimal methodology for investment in ICT in order to promote developing economies.

The Coordinator of the Knowledge Stations Project from NITC participated in the conference and presented the success story of the Jordanian project, the Knowledge Stations, in bridging the digital divide and helping in alleviating poverty in the remote and rural areas of Jordan

APTLD Board and Member Meeting, Amman, 2-3/10/2005

 

The Project Management Unit (PMU) of the Knowledge Stations at the National Information Technology Center held four workshops for training trainers in Youth Leadership in May and June, 2005. One hundred trainees from the different Knowledge Stations participated in the workshops. The workshops were conducted to implement the MoU between the NITC and Help the Children Federation.

The Workshops concentrated on the following tracks:

o        Participative leadership as a substitute for traditional leadership.

o        Social change as a product of effective new leadership techniques.

o       Promotion and support of equality and justice among weaker groups as youth  and women.

The Workshops aim at enhancing youth participation in leadership and in identifying community needs and developing and implementing initiatives to meet ICT needs through successful leadership characterized by credibility and transparency, analytical thinking and passionate interest in the community.
