Dr. Haidar Fraihat Appointed as NITC Director General
In its weekly meeting, the Cabinet of Ministers appointed Dr. Haidar Fraihat as director general of the National Information Technology Center ( NITC) starting 26/4/2006. NITC is the arm of the MoICT mandated with implementing the plans, programs and ICT strategy approved by the Government.
A New Board of Directors for NITC
The first meeting of the new Board of Directors of NITC was held under the chairmanship of Minister of MoICT Engineer A. Kurdi. This meeting was also the first for the new Director General, Dr. Haidar Fraihat. The Board includes the following members: Chairman: Minister of Information and Communication Technology.

In June 2004, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MoICT) issued a National Strategy Plan related to information and communication technology and postal sectors of the Jordan economy. The strategy is directed to different parties within the ICT and Post sectors defining their role in meeting the objectives of the strategy and clarifying the responsibilities of stakeholders outside the sectors. The NITC operates in a complex environment with various stakeholders. It operates with universities, the private sector, the public sector, with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, with the Board of NITC and with the different steering committees. Dr. Khaled Elshuraydeh, Secretary General of the Higher Council for Science and Technology, was elected as deputy to the Chairman of the Board Council of the National Information Technology Center.
The Regional Workshop on IP STRATEGIES AND IDN ISSUES, Damascus,Syria, 16-18, May 2006
The NITC participated in a regional workshop on IP strategies and IDN issues in Damascus from May 16-18 organized by the ITU Arab Regional Office. Participants came from Algeria, Bahrain, Djibouti, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Mauritania, Oman, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, and the UAE. ICT Policy Making in ESCWA Member Countries, Beirut, Lebanon, 2-4 May, 2006 NITC participated in the workshop on “ICT Policy Making in ESCWA Member Countries” organized by ESCWA. The workshop aims at contributing to streamlining the process of building an integrated knowledge society and to provide decision makers in the region with a framework and a guide for the design and development of national strategies, the implementation of such strategies in ESCWA member countries and the evaluation of their impact. It aims also at promoting bilateral, regional and international cooperation in the areas of ICT policy, strategy and regulation through the establishment of a network of ICT actors and policy makers for sharing experiences and knowledge. The workshop is a major component of the project “Capacity-Building for ICT policy-making”. This project is executed by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs in collaboration with the United Nations Regional Commissions, UNDP and UNCTAD as part of their activities for the implementation of WSIS recommendations. The workshop coverered the following topics:
2. Formulating sectoral policies as part of an integrated knowledge society. 3. Implementing the strategies and devising plans of action. 4. Measuring, analyzing and evaluating the impact of ICT policies. 5. Prioritizing of actions for the knowledge society. 6. Designing partnership schemes and financing initiatives towards the knowledge society. NITC prepared and presented a paper on evaluating the impact of ICT policies.
