Establishing Public Private Partnerships for ICT Initiatives, Amman, 26/2-1/3/2007

 

       The National Information Center participated in a workshop organized by ESCWA in Amman, and hosted by the Ministry of Information Communication Technology. The workshop entitled “Establishing Public Private Partnerships for ICT Initiatives” discussed the strategic and practical side of partnership between the public and private sectors in ICT initiatives. The Ministry, with Alcatel-Lucent launched a report on “Wide Bandwidth for Development in the ESCWA Region to Promote Penetration of ICT Services in the Global Information Society”.

Dr. Haidar Fraihat, Director General of NITC participated with a paper entitled “Identification of Potential Public Private Partnerships in e-Government: a World Bank View”.

E-government Operations Center

 

       On 28/2/2007, and after a long process of negotiations, the Ministry of Information Communication Technology commissioned the National Information Technology Center to manage and operate the e-government Operations Center. Qualified engineers were recruited to meet international standards.

NITC Participates in the Public Meeting of ICANN, 28th, Lisbon, 23/3/29th/3/2007

 

       For the first time since its establishment, NITC participated in the 28th Public Meeting of ICANN in Lisbon. More than 830 people from 81 countries attended the meeting. The meeting was one of ICANN’s issue-intensive meetings and it helped ICANN make substantial progress on numerous issues. ICANN is the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. It is responsible for the global coordination of the Internet’s system of unique identifiers. This includes domain names as well as addresses used in a variety of Internet protocols. ICANN’s global stakeholders include domain name registrars, meet regularly to develop policies that ensure the Internet’s ongoing security and stability.

In the 28th meeting, subjects that were discussed included formalizing relationships with country codes Top Level Domains (ccTLDs), ICANN’s new global division and IDNs (Internationalized Domain Names). NITC is a member in two ICANN committees, the GAC (Government Advisory Committee) and ccNSO (country code Name Support Organization).

 Dr. Haidar Fraihat, Director General of NITC, participated special Middle East roundtable discussions and suggested the establishment of an ad hoc Arab establishment for the Internet affairs. The aim of the establishment is to take consensus on various political issues propounded by ICANN.

Other Activities

 

  • In 11/1/2007 NITC participated in the workshop concerned with the study and evaluation of the Jordanian Government strategic agreement with Microsoft in the Ministry of Information Communication Technology.

 

  • In 30/1/2007 Engineer Nasser Khalaf, Director of the Knowledge Stations Project, was awarded the Independence Medal of second degree during a special ceremony held for the King’s birthday.

 

  • In 5/3/2007 NITC participated in a seminar on“ EU Programs on ICDL” organized by Advanced Quality Assurance Systems.

 

  • In 3/5/2007 a group of school students from UNRWA visited the NITC and the Knowledge Stations.

 

  • In 19-21/3/2007 NITC participated in the regional Fifth WEBIT 2007 exhibition for electronic web sites.

Memoranda of Understanding

 

  • On 19/3/2007 NITC signed an MoU with the Development and Employment Fund whereby NITC, through its Knowledge Stations will provide online access to loans applications.                                                                                                                                                                                                                   
  • On 20/3/2007 NITC signed a MoU with the Postal Savings Fund to facilitate application for loans remotely by providing access to the web site of the Fund.

 

  • On 21/3/2007 NITC signed another MoU with the Cooperative Society of Retired Servicemen whereby the Knowledge Stations provide computer training for the retired servicemen in the Society.

    • In 14/1/2007 Dr. Fraihat attended the opening ceremony of the Gender Forum which was jointly organized by the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation and the World Bank.

    • In 11/2/2007 Dr. Fraihat attended the opening ceremony of the “International Forum for Higher Education” which was opened by his Majesty the King in the Dead Sea.

  • In 3/2/2007 Dr. Fraihat was the guest of the Television Program “ Good Morning Jordan” where he talked about NITC.

 

  • In 12/2/2007 Dr. Fraihat gave a lecture in Abdul Hamid Shoman Cultural Center about the role of Information Technology in economic development and the responsibilities of the National Information Center, Jordan’s e-readiness and the uses of Information Technology resources.

 

  • In On 3/3/2007 Dr. Fraihat gave a lecture on “Information Technology in Jordan” at the Jordanian Society of Accountants.

 

  • In 21/3/2007 he was the guest of a radio talk show program on Amman Net.

 

  • In 1/4//2007 gave a lecture on “e-commerce” in the Jordanian College of National Defense.
