Two Million Visitors to the Web Sites of NITC
The number of visitors reported to the different web sites that belong to NITC in 2007 until the end of May was 2 million visitors. Most of the hits recorded came from the U.S., Jordan and from the surrounding countries from the Arab World. This is a positive indicator that our web sites are continuously used by surfers of the net.
Domain Name Registration under .jo
The NITC, the local registrar of .jo, registered 313 domain names during the first half of 2007. Under the extension .jo, 148 registrations were recorded, .com.jo came next where 127 registrations were recorded. The rest were divided among .sch.jo, .org.jo, .gov.jo, .net.jo, .edu.jo and .name.jo. :

The Knowledge Stations Project is a national IT initiative. Its main aim is to bridge the digital divide and help create the information society, especially in the remote areas of Jordan.

In 28/2/2007, the Ministry of Information Communication Technology authorized the NITC to manage and operate the Operation Center of the e-government. Fourteen qualified engineers were recruited and five tenders were announced to buy furniture and equipment. The Operations Center includes five technical teams, Networking Team, Systems Team, Support Team, Security Team and the E-gov Portal Team. The Operations Center is currently studying the development plan for NITC and is in the process of selecting the most appropriate location for the Op Center.
National Technical Development Department
The Department reviewed the web sites of the MoICT and the Ministry of Public Sector Reform and the e-gov portal. The content of each web site was edited and the hyper links were checked for accuracy. The Department also helped market the .jo and domain name registration by inviting 250 Jordanian organizations to register a Jordanian domain name. 90 organizations from the public sector were requested to update their web site content. A comparative study was conducted on the services and prices of the different ISPs.
The Department advises different national technical committees in tender specifications and evaluation and participates in the hand over of equipment. The Department conducted a survey on the use of Microsoft and Oracle software in Jordan. Different prices for different e-services that NITC provides to government organizations are regularly evaluated to provide government organization with the best service possible.

Internet Services
The National Information Center participated in the international exhibition and conference, CARDEX 2007, in Cairo from 6-9 May. The conference was conducted concurrently with the exhibition and was attended by more than 70 international companies and organizations specialized in smart solution applications that are useful in implementing e-government projects, or health, transportation, banks and finance, stock markets and counterfeiting. CARDEX exhibition and conference is one of the important activities in the Middle East and North Africa because it is comprehensive and integrated. It covers smart solutions various applications, biometric systems and border protection systems including electoral systems.
Arabic Content on the E-gov Portal
The NITC, through the Department of National Technology Development, is reviewing and evaluating the available content on the e-gov portal. It edits and checks link accuracy on government department web sites that provide e-services to citizen. Information evaluated on the web sites is related to the following categories:
Defects and shortcomings are reported to the liaison officer of the related government organization through email.
The National Information Technology Center participated in the joint meeting of the Arabic Domain Names Working Group and the IGF Preparatory Working Group in Cairo from 7-9 May, 2007. Nine Arab countries participated in the meeting including UAE, Tunis, Iraq, Syria, Oman, Qatar, Egypt, Morocco, Yemen and the Technical Secretariat of the Council of Arab Ministers for Communication Information Technology, ITU Regional Office, ESCWA and ICANN. Subjects discussed in the meeting included Arabic domain names, the Arab standard for country codes ( 1985-642), ESCWA’s Internet draft and the Arabic Project for Arabic domain names and preparation for the IGF in Brazil 2007. Dr. Haidar Fraihat, Director General of NITC presented a proposal on establishing an Arab organization for ccTLDs. The proposition will be presented through official channels in the next meeting in September, 2007.
